Make a Zip Code for Your Dog so He Can Walk Safely

Taking your dog with you when you go camping, hiking or in the park is fun for you and your puppy, but they can get lost and get into trouble. Here’s a way to give them the freedom to explore without wandering too far outdoors.

While you can simply tie your dog’s leash to a picnic table or tree, Go Pet Friendly explains the benefits of a dog zipper:

First, you don’t waste all of your time distracting the dogs from each other, from the picnic table or any stick, tree, or anthill that they manage to wrap around. Secondly, you will never have such a nauseous feeling in your stomach when you watch your dog mercilessly pull on the end of the cable, nearly decapitating itself.

Basically, you just hang a rope between two trees and then tie the dog to a leash so it can move back and forth freely. You will need a nylon rope, two spring clips and one snap hook for each dog. If you have a strong dog, use heavier rope and buckles. Pass the rope through the loops on the clasps, tie them in knots, and burn the ends of the rope to prevent fraying. Wrap the cable around a couple of sturdy trees or picnic tables and attach your dog’s leash to the cable with a carabiner. You should put a harness on your dog, not a collar, to avoid injury if the leash is pulled.

If you make a longer zipper (20-25 feet per dog), you can use it on multiple dogs as shown in the photo above. While this is a great way to let your dog wander around your camp or picnic area for a bit, you shouldn’t leave him unattended on the zipline.
