Learn Do’s and Don’ts on Your First Marathon
Marathons are already terrifying, so the more you know about training, preparation and what to do after the race, the better. If you’re looking to run a marathon but you’re feeling lost, this visual guide will help you get started.
This visual guide from the blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan gives you a quick rundown of what you should and shouldn’t do before, during, and after your first marathon. You will learn that you should start training at least 16 weeks before the competition, that your last big lunch before the race should actually be 48 hours before the race time, and that you should tape and lubricate before the starting pistol fires. You will also learn that you should not overhydrate before or during long runs, that you should always try out your running gear before using it in a race, and that you should not ignore the golden hour immediately after the end of your run – eat some food so you can start repairing those muscles, and support your legs to reduce pain and swelling. Check out the full guide below.
