The Most Effective Ways to Complete an Email so You Get a Response

We all send and receive a flood of emails every day and no one wants their messages to be ignored, but what is the best way to complete a message so that you actually get a response? Thank you, best wishes, or something else?

Boomerang, a company that develops popular email productivity apps , recently conducted research that looked at different email signing options and response rates for each phrase. The three most common closing messages were not surprises — thank you, hello, and greetings — but “ thank you in advance ” received the most responses. This phrase was answered by 65.7%. In comparison, posts ending in “best” received only 51.2% of responses. And in general, ending the message with gratitude always helps :

The difference a simple “thank you” makes for getting a response became even clearer when we compared the “thank you” emails to everyone else. 62% responded to emails in which we recorded a grateful closure. That’s up from 46% of email responses without a thankful closure.

Of course, the context and settings of the message also affect how you finish it (I would not write “XOXO” to my boss, and I would not write “good wishes” to my mom). Moreover, “thanks in advance” is likely to be related to a specific request, which means that there will be more responses to these messages anyway. But that’s something to consider the next time you write an email that you really need a response to.
