Happy Hour With 3 Ingredients: Refreshing Italian Greyhound

Hello everyone and welcome to Happy Hour 3 Ingredients , a weekly drinks column featuring very simple yet delicious libations. We’ll start with a sweet, tart and slightly bitter Italian greyhound, which turns out to be the drink that turned me into a gin lover.

There are many variations of this cocktail. Some people make their own with vodka, and some use Aperol instead of Campari (that’s the Italian part), but everyone uses the juice of ruby red grapefruit (that’s part of Greyhound). To make this delicious citrus elixir, you will need:

  • 1 1/2 ounce gin – I like Hendrick’s (cucumber), Tanquerey 10 (gourmet) and Boodle’s London dry (budget).
  • 5 ounces of ruby and red grapefruit juice
  • 1/2 – 1 ounce Campari, depending on how much you love Campari.

Pour everything into a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake until cold. Pour into a lowball (or highball, or a red Solo cup – let’s not exaggerate) with a few ice cubes or one really large ice cube. It is also known that I take the lazy route and pour everything into a glass filled with ice, bypassing the shaker completely, but this is not the correct behavior of a mixologist. (I won’t tell if you don’t.)
