If You’re Going to Cry at Work, Blame It on Passion.
Tears can flow at the wrong time. For example, when you are trying to look like a professional at work, in which everything is put together. Here, here, dry your eyes and tell everyone that this is because you care as hell.
New research by Elizabeth Bailey Wolfe of Harvard Business School suggests there is a good way to hide the trail of your tears. In a series of five experiments, Wolf and her colleagues found that participants who claimed that their tears were caused by an emotional investment in their work were considered more competent than those who blamed other causes. For example, participants who stated that the main reason was team member conflict or that they were “just showing emotion” were rated as less competent. So cry at work if you have to. But if you get caught, use it as an opportunity to show what a great employee you are.
