Train Your Voice With This Singing App
iOS: If you want to really kill him in karaoke, hitting the notes roughly isn’t enough. The free Vanido app helps you practice singing exercises and shows you in real time how well you play these notes.
However, first you have to figure out what your range is and how it relates to terms like bass, tenor, soprano, etc. (I’m a mezzo-soprano. I already feel like a fantasy.) Once the app knows which notes you can sing, it can give you daily voice exercises.
You only get three a day, but if you come back tomorrow there will be a different set of exercises. Or, as the app calls them, games. Each of them is a little riff that you sing: “ya ya ya ya ya”, for example, the tones rise and then fall again. And then the app gives you a slightly higher note to start with, and you continue with maybe a dozen repetitions.
If you’ve ever taken vocal or choir lessons, some of these exercises will sound familiar to you. Others are more interesting, such as the Bumblebee, which zigzags up and down quickly. There is a lot of variety here, so you won’t be bored.
You need to use the app with headphones: it plays piano notes through the headphones, and then uses a microphone to listen to your voice. (You will want to do your singing lessons in a quiet place.)
The best part is the real-time visualization of what your voice is doing. If you climb too high or too low as you get closer to the note, you will see it on the screen. This is both the strength and the weakness of this app: you can get lost watching a small wavy line and end up paying more attention to it than how you sound.
It’s up to you to decide if you like the way your voice sounds. The app does not show you any examples of good singing and cannot advise you on anything other than the pitch you are playing at. But if you need to learn to sing accurately and with immediate honest feedback, Vanido is a great pocket-sized voice trainer.
