How to Eat an Avocado Without Hurting Yourself
Due to their delicious, creamy nature, avocados are small slippery bugs, and freeing the pit from the oily flesh can be tricky. However, if you know what you are doing, you can remove the pit quickly (and safely) in no time.
There are three ways to do this, depending on what you plan to use the flesh for:
- Stab it: If you want the avocado halves to stay whole and beautiful, just tap the bone lightly with a heavy, sharp knife. (A blunt or light blade will slide straight from the hole into your hand, which obviously won’t do.) The video above can give you a visual idea of the method, and if you need an extra layer of protection, you can hold the fruit in a tea towel.
- Cut it into quarters: If you want wedges or slices – for example, for a fried cado – simply cut the fruit into quarters , cutting along a vertical circle. The hole will stick to one of the quarters and you can tear it off.
- Just squeeze it all into a bowl: if you’re going to knead it all up anyway, there is no reason to be precious with a bone extraction. Just cut it in half and squeeze everything into a bowl along with the pit. Scrape off any flesh that might stick to the bone and start guasing.
Now you have no pits and can use the green fruit to make a wide variety of dishes , from gourmet toast to creamy margarita.
