I Tried Using Food As Makeup, but It Didn’t Work Out Well.

Miss Da is a highly creative YouTube personality known for her quirky cooking videos, but her latest video shows an adventurous internet star putting food on and around her face instead of on top of it.

First of all, let me say that I love this video. An interesting plot, office chick and Oreo earrings are all you need in a video. The plot is pretty simple: After working all night in the office, Aga discovers that she needs to get to the “Internet Celebrity Festival” quickly. She slaps the mask out of the sheet (clutch movement), then wanders around the office looking for food and stationery that she can use to create the perfect look.

Ms Yeah ends up looking pretty pretty – almost too pretty – and I was inspired to see if I could create a similar look with similar products.

While I couldn’t find the exact ingredients that Yeah uses to paint his face, I found pretty similar things and started creating my own culinary cosmetics, not without some doubt in my heart. (While I don’t mind using edible ingredients in cosmetics , painting eyes with pens and water for a pin seemed like a bad plan, but I’m not the type to give it up until I try it.) Watch the video above to see the results, and below you will find pictures and instructions for making each cosmetic product.

Face

I couldn’t find the exact brand of glutinous rice flour used by Yeah, but I didn’t think that brand would make such a big difference. I added some flour and cocoa powder to a bowl, then stirred in water until my mixture reached the consistency shown in the video. I also drizzled with some almond oil. (Yes, I used sesame seeds, but I was not there.)

The resulting product was grainy, sticky and did not look like foundation at all. In terms of coverage, it definitely covered my face, and I would be lying if I said that it doesn’t distract from my big pores that bother me all the time. It was definitely the most exfoliating foundation I have ever used, but perhaps Yeah uses a less abrasive brand of flour.

I tried stroking my face with pure rice flour as a powder, paying particular attention to the t-zone, but that didn’t work either. I also tried the “cocoa contouring” trick, which, while super fun, didn’t give me the Kardashian-style cheekbones I’d hoped for. (Spoiler alert: I have no cheekbones on my face.)

Eyes

Yes, she uses a combination of instant coffee, her colleague’s hair, pens, pins, and – again – sticky rice flour to make her eyes sparkle. I missed the lash hairstyle – even though Beth offered to send me a few of her own – because they looked too advanced for me to pull off, in terms of skill. However, I tried everything else, smearing coffee over my brows (which actually worked) and applying a pen on my eyes.

Tip: don’t draw your eyes with a pen. The pens are sharp and dirty and should not be held close to the eyes. Did I know this was happening? Yes, but I’m a trash panda who is at least a little ready for anything, and you are better than that.

I didn’t create an entire palette like Yeah does in her video, but instead focused on one color: a pleasant, whitish lime green. I soaked the green apple pins – thanks for the dog lime coming back – in some water until all their gorgeous color was gone, then mixed that sweet water with a little rice flour to make my shadow. It was pretty enough, but when I tried to rub it over my eyes, it just rolled into little crumbs and fell from my eyelids onto the rest of my face.

Lips

To get a pair of pouting lips, Yeah combined dragon fruit juice with some kind of ketchup-like substance. I couldn’t find a dragon fruit, but I had some strawberries on hand, so I chopped them up and mixed them with ketchup. Then I rubbed the dirty mixture on my lips, trying not to gag all the time. The impromptu pout paint certainly made my lips look red and shiny, but it didn’t have a ton of longevity and it gave them a ketchup flavor that I didn’t even like a bit.

Of all the DIY beauty tips listed above, the only one that came close to real was instant eyebrow coffee powder, but even it looked a little odd. Maybe this is my technique? I’m not that good with makeup.
