What Do You Drink When You Are Not Drinking?
Hello, and welcome back toWhat’s Cooking? , a weekly open thread where you can share all your brilliant thoughts, tips, recipes and opinions on anything edible. This week I want to focus on what to drink, especially what you drink when you abstain from drinking.
People choose not to drink for a variety of reasons, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t enjoy a fun and addictive drink. The options for non-alcoholic drinkers can sometimes seem like an afterthought, and even if you’re just trying to cut back on alcohol, you may feel like you’re missing out on more than ethanol. (Besides the booze itself, I often find myself missing the routine of mixing a cocktail or opening a bottle of good wine at the end of a long day.) So, I want to know what kind of soft drinks you drink. when you need an alcohol-free liquid treat.
- Do you have a favorite brand or flavor of seltzer water? Currently, I really like the tangerine La Croix, but my favorite is the polar seltzer water, especially their black cherry and cherry limade.
- What are your favorite ways to fill with water? Cucumber is always nice, but strawberry tops make it surprisingly aromatic .
- Which mocktail do you prefer? I like plain seltzer water with fresh lemon juice and IKEA elderberry syrup . It’s sweet, tart and (very) distantly reminiscent of French 75.
- Have you ever come across non-alcoholic beer or wine that is really worth drinking? Me not.
- Have you ever added traditional cocktail side dishes to non-cocktail drinks? I love lemon zest in Diet Coke or Luxardo cherries in ginger ale. (If I really want to pamper myself, I’ll buy ginger beer instead of beer.)
- What details of the drink are important to you? Good ice and a good glass can cheer up any drink, alcoholic or not. Drinking juice from whiskey glasses is especially fun.
Also, don’t underestimate the comfort of childhood favorites. Chocolate milk knows no age and always seems special. It is also known that I drink Welch’s grape juice when I need comfort.
