The 2-Day Fitting Rule for Clothes Shopping
Do you see this dress? I recently returned it almost 48 hours after purchase. I thought I could do it, but I actually looked like a fantastic pirate.
I’ve always been a big online shopper and a frequent impulse shopper. Because of this, my closet usually consisted of ten things that I wear all the time and an embarrassing amount of second-hand clothes with tags still attached, or worse, things that I ripped off immediately but never left the house. I often buy things that I like to wear, but since I can’t really take them off, they just sit in my closet, waiting for my next disappointing trip to a thrift store.
To avoid the awful feeling of having nothing in your closet to wear, I’ve created a two-day fitting rule. Here’s how it works: if you try on something twice and don’t leave the house wearing it, you have to bring it back. This works with weather clothes too, you just have to be VERY honest with yourself (are these rubber boots pinching my feet? Etc). That’s all!
This rule really worked for me, especially when I realized how easy it is to get a refund. Most online retailers include a return label in their original shipment. You simply peel it off, stick it on, and drop it into the letterbox or mailroom in your office.
