Use a Label Maker to Keep Track of Measurements in Your Home

Renovating a home often means moving things around, which includes taking measurements to make sure everything fits. You can jot down the dimensions of the window or wall on paper when you move to a new space, but if you want to change something later, you may have to take the time to re-measure it. Luckily, your number artwork is easy to immortalize: just set it up and forget it with the labeller.

The idea came to me after an impromptu trip to IKEA for trinkets, which led me to a risky decision: I bought a TV stand, not knowing if it would fit. My luck paid off, but I didn’t take that risk and buy a pair of much needed blinds because I didn’t know the size of my windows.

Label every wall you have

To avoid this problem again, I decided to measure twice and mark once by sticking a sticker on all with sizes that might interest me.

I started measuring my walls, printing the results, printing them out and applying labels in inconspicuous places. The wall decals in my living room are behind the TV on the corner of the cornice, with the same decals near the opposite sofa. The dimensions of the window go under the bottom sash and the door decals are placed on the bottom of the outer door molding. The dimensions of the cabinet follow the lower half of the door.

Make your labels small and hidden

Since it is just a number label, it is small enough to fit anywhere without drawing attention. If your labeler leaves wider margins than usual, just adjust it in the settings, or grab the scissors and start cutting. I’ve scaled down the font to a smaller size so it’s less noticeable until I really need it.
