How to Mute Tabs in Google Chrome

Your favorite tech company, Google, is working on a new feature that could keep videos from autoplaying forever. Soon you will be able to silence your worst offenders forever , saving you the headache of finding the mute button over and over again.

The mute feature is still in development, but you can try it out now. You will need to install Google Chrome Canary , a developer-focused version of the browser that offers new but more experimental (and therefore more complex) features.

Canary is less stable than your default Google Chrome, so you shouldn’t use it as your default browser. You will also need to open Canary from a terminal or command line by adding “—enable-features = SoundContentSetting” to your command. You can turn the sound option on or off by clicking the site information field in the URL bar (the icon is usually a lowercase letter “i” or a green padlock if you are on a secure page).

You can temporarily mute tabs by right-clicking them and choosing Mute Tab. If for some reason your Chrome browser does not support disabling tabs, you can manually enable it, but keep in mind: enabling experimental features may compromise your security or delete browsing data. If you enter chrome: // flags in the address bar, you will see a list of disabled experimental features; search for “mute” to find the Tab Audio Muting user interface control.

Enabling this feature will not only turn on the speaker indicator on your tab, but it will also allow you to right-click and disable the specified tab or multiple tabs depending on your choice. It won’t disable that site if you choose to close and reopen the tab, but it will itch until this experimental feature falls into the hands of regular Chrome users.
