Cut Your Baby’s Bangs With Nose Hair Scissors
You know you earned the Parental Badge of Courage when you endured a sweaty, heartbreaking ordeal that cuts a wriggling toddler’s bangs. Now that my daughter is four years old, she sits relatively calmly in the process, thanks to the Beat Bugs on the iPad in the bathroom, but sometimes she likes to turn her head without warning to look in the mirror and give me a slight heart attack. … Can’t she see that I am holding a sharp object millimeters from her eyeballs? Apparently not.
This tip from Ashi Dornfest’s book Parenting Tips : 134 Ingenious Shortcuts for Living with Children gave me a true “aha!” Moment: Cut baby bangs with nose hair scissors.
“The nose hair scissors are perfect for cutting the bangs of a wriggling toddler because they are sharp enough to cut accurately, but the blades are small and with rounded ends,” writes Dornfest. Clever! The eyeballs will remain intact!
Here are some more tips I’ve learned about cutting toddler bangs over the years, mostly through trial and many mistakes:
- If you have one of these versatile waterproof bibs , use it. Then just throw your hair away and dry it off when you’re done.
- I use the “curl and cut” method on both my bangs and my daughter’s bangs. I’m not entirely sure how this leads to a near-perfect haircut (you’ll have to trim a few naughty hairs anyway), but I’ll take that.
- Don’t forget the iPad.
