School Shopping Rule “One Folder – One Folder”

At the start of the school year, every written assignment, certificate, or piece of art your child brings home is a sweet thrill, a token that can be preserved for years to come. But then, pretty soon, your house is awash with papers, and it’s only November, damn it.

School’s shopping season is in full swing, but before you hand your kids shopping carts and let them run freely through the Target aisles, you’ll need to make a plan to keep clutter to a minimum . Happiness expert Gretchin Rubin offers a simple solution for special school year keepsakes : use a file box for each child with a folder for each year. “Include only what is necessary to capture a typical year, such as a child’s birthday invitation, school photos and a few art projects,” she told The Washington Post . Check out some examples of how the system works here , here and here .

It’s a simple setup that allows you to hold onto objects you love (like a poem your child wrote about how wonderful her parents were). For everything else, you can either throw it away or digitize it with an app like ArtKive .
