Why Not Buy an IPhone X at Launch, According to One of Apple’s Founders

The iPhone X is almost done, but one of Apple’s biggest supporters is not very happy with the new phone. Steve Wozniak , a co-founder of Apple who has been an outsider since he left the company in 1985, told CNBC that he would not tackle the iPhone X on day one.

If you’re in doubt about the release of a new Apple phone, Wozniak’s decision may be enough to push you to the brink. Below is his explanation for using Apple’s latest gadget:

Why Wozniak is in no hurry to buy an iPhone X

Woz (as his friends and fans call him) did not give a specific reason for the lack of interest in the iPhone X. He notes that he already owns an iPhone 8, which he likes, although he admits that it is very similar to the iPhone. 7 and iPhone 6 before it. So maybe he just doesn’t think there is another upgrade worth it this year.

“For some reason, the iPhone X will be the first iPhone I didn’t update to on the first day,” Wozniak told CNBC, “but my wife will do it so I’ll be close enough to see it.”

The Apple co-founder is also concerned that Face ID – a new face-scanning technology replacing the Touch ID fingerprint scanner on the iPhone X – may not function correctly at launch. This is a major concern given Apple’s track record of rolling out new buggy features, although it’s unlikely the company would have risked making such a serious mistake if Face ID weren’t fully market-ready.

Wozniak has also changed his mind about Apple products in the past. Last year, he warned Apple not to remove the headphone jack on the iPhone 7, but came out in support of his decision after the phone was officially announced. So it’s entirely possible that we could see The Woz pick up the iPhone X pretty soon if Face ID isn’t a complete disaster.

Until then, you can follow Wozniak’s advice and opt for the iPhone 8 instead.
