How to Make Siri Pronounce Your Friends’ Names Correctly
One of the most rewarding things you can do with Siri on your iPhone is dictate a text message and send it to a friend, but it can also bring up one of the most annoying flaws in Apple’s software assistant : Siri is really bad at pronouncing unusual names. Luckily, there is a solution if you’re tired of hearing Siri mispronounce the same names over and over again.
AppleInsider has a video tutorial on how to correct Siri pronunciation. Check it out below, or read the step-by-step instructions if you can’t watch the video right now.
How to fix Siri pronunciation of your friends’ names
The next time Siri mispronounces a name, simply say, “You mispronounced it.” (You can also activate the interaction by saying, “Hey Siri, show the contact …” and then spelling their name.) Then correct the pronunciation of the AI.
Siri will ask you how to pronounce the contact’s name. Say it out loud and you’ll form a list of options with a play button next to each so you can listen to the sound. Choose the pronunciation you like best, or click Tell Siri Again if none of them work. Once you find the correct one, you do the same for their last name, and then you’re done.
If you don’t feel like talking to Siri, there is also a text alternative. Just go to your iPhone contact list, select a friend and select “Edit”. Then scroll down, click Add Field and select Pronunciation Name. Type how Siri should pronounce the word. Then do the same with their last name.
Finally, if Siri keeps pronouncing your name wrong, just say, “Hey Siri, who am I?” When the AI responds with a garbled version of your name, answer “You mispronounced” and follow the same steps as before to correct pronunciation.
