How to Simulate Piano Playing: Lesson 4

Earlier in How To Simulate Piano Playing, composer and musician Jason Oberholzer taught you all the building blocks: what to do with your left hand , what to do with your right hand, and how chords work . Today he collects it all. In the video above, Jason shows you how to play the piano and sound good even if you have no idea what you are doing.

It’s our ultimate goal of making the game feel enjoyable enough for you to encourage yourself to experiment. This is a self-taught approach to piano playing that you will not give up on frustration because you will always ruin the last note of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”. In fact, Jason teaches you how to turn any error into a tweak to get a satisfactory resolution.

As I have always emphasized, these videos are not a substitute for regular piano lessons. They are intended for the millions of people who do not have time to “properly” learn piano, but would like to experience the joy of making music. They are meant to interest and excite you. (And if you ever take the “real” lessons, the confidence and curiosity you learn here will help you get through the more tedious exercises and learn the songs.) Everyone deserves to experience the joy of making music.

Come back tomorrow when we end this series with a keyboard lesson.
