How to Unlock Hidden Google Dark Theme on Pixel 2
It’s still a day before the Pixel 2 launches , but review samples are already available, and critics have discovered a hidden feature in Google’s new phone : the device has a secret dark theme , and it’s surprisingly easy to unlock.
Here’s how to do it if you want the UI to be a little easier on the eyes.
Everything you need to know about Pixel 2 dark theme
The Pixel 2 lacks a settings menu toggle to switch between light and dark themes. Instead, all you have to do is change the wallpaper to a darker image. To do this, simply press and hold on the home screen until a menu appears. Then select “Wallpaper” and choose from a list of default options and your own saved images.
After making the changes, the dark theme will automatically turn on to match your new wallpaper. It adds a dark background with white text for the app bar, notification drop-down tab, quick settings menu, volume indicators and power menu, according to 9to5Google .
Why dark theme is really important to Pixel 2
Aside from your visual preferences, using the dark theme on the Pixel 2 also has a big advantage: it can save battery power. This is because newer Google phones use OLED displays that show black images by turning off the corresponding pixels. The blacker your screen, the less power you use to power it.
As an added bonus, OLED also offers deeper blacks than LCD. So this dark theme should look even better than it does on an LCD phone.
