How to Get Rid of the Smell of Farting in a Teen’s Room
Jolie Kerr is a cleaning expert, advice columnist, and New York Times bestselling author of My Boyfriend Is Boiling In My Purse … And Other Things You Can’t Ask Martha About. Her flagship column, Ask a Pure Man, debuted in 2011. Here at Offspring we’ve launched a new iteration dedicated to parenting and all the mess it brings.
My teen’s room always smells. Can anyone help with this? It’s like the usual smell of a boy, like a musty fart cave.
I think we’ve all been together long enough for you to know this without me knowing, but just in case: Seriously, I love the evocative nature of how this question was asked! The Musty Fart Cave is fun, and I bet everyone who reads it knows the exact scent you’re talking about.
The musty fart cave odor can definitely be gotten rid of, and I can recommend a few specific foods. But it’s also worth mentioning that installing a fan in the room along with a dehumidifier and / or dehumidifier such as DampRid can help to help fight mustiness.
Canister odor traps
Canister odor eliminators are best when it comes to containing teen odor, mainly because they do the job for you. The idea is to take one or two of these products, depending on the size of the room, place them in an unobtrusive place and let them do their thing.
There are so many of these products available – home improvement and hardware stores will offer a variety of options – and if you have a favorite, let us know in the comments! Here are some of the ones I usually recommend:
Bad air sponge : Technically odorless, although it has its own odor. But it really, really works, and the packaging seems appropriate for use in a teen’s room, you know?
OdoBan Solid Odor Absorber : This product comes in three sizes and different flavors. There is no odorless option, but I have 1 oz Morning Dew flavored on my table and the smell is not obtrusive at all.
Gonzo Odor Eliminator : An odorless volcanic mineral based odor absorber that can be easily hidden under a bed or chair.
You can also do it yourself by placing bowls of coffee grounds or white vinegar, which act as odor absorbers.
Deodorizing sprays
Ditch Febreze, which is a bit like perfume, and instead opt for one of these odor-free spray to quickly get rid of bad odor in your room.
Ozium : Okay, look, don’t tell your kid that, but … Ozium is a substance that marijuana smokers use to mask the smell of weed. I mention this to illustrate that it actually works . Ozium also offers canister products.
Zep Musty Odor Eliminator : Zep’s products are pretty good, and if you don’t like the Crisp Mountain Air scent that comes with the musty formula, just grab one of the other elimination products that Zep produces.
Lysol : Good old lysol! It seems to me that sometimes people forget about lysol, and lysol is a really great material to remember.
For deeper cleaning
The textiles will retain odors, so in addition to some odor-eliminating products, it would be a good idea to wash some items that can hold that teenage funky in. You don’t need to do all of this, but here are some things to think about with deep cleaning:
- Curtains / Window Trims: Window fabric trims can in most cases be washed directly in the washing machine.
- Comforters and pillows: Here are some old Ask a Cleaner materials about washing oversized items like blankets and pillows .
- Carpets, rugs and upholstered furniture: many rugs are machine washable; If you have large rugs or carpeting, consider renting a carpet cleaner (which can also be used for upholstery). For a less time-consuming freshening up, try a powder deodorant that you can vacuum, such as the Arm & Hammer Household Deodorizer .
