IOS 11.2 Delivers Faster Wireless Charging

IPhone 8 and iPhone X owners using wireless chargers to power their devices will soon have a pleasant surprise with a software update: Apple’s upcoming iOS 11.2 will add support for faster wireless charging for Qi-compatible smartphones. However, updating the phone is not enough to increase the charging speed. You will need a suitable wireless charging cradle to take advantage of the faster charging function.

According to MacRumors , the 11.2 update will bring support for 7.5W Qi wireless charging, an improvement over the current 5W limit allowed by iOS 11.1.1.

You will need a compatible charger

Not every wireless charging pad supports the 7.5W faster charging speed, which means you might have to roll out a new model if you want to take advantage of the faster charging speeds. Apple is selling two third-party wireless charging stands right now that deliver 7.5W charging speeds. The $ 50 Samsung 9W Charging Pad and the $ 50 RavPower 10W Charging Pad support even faster charging speeds and are compatible with iPhone 8 and iPhone X thanks to the Qi wireless charging standard used in smartphones. Apple is working on its own AirPower wireless charging pad that will charge up to three devices at the same time, like your iPhone, AirPods, and Apple Watch.

Wired charging is still faster

Fast charging is always a plus, especially when it comes to wireless charging. However, wireless charging is noticeably slower than direct charging via USB , and even up to 7.5W, the iPhone 8 and iPhone X will charge more slowly using the wireless charging pads compared to the Samsung Galaxy S8, which supports 9 -watt fast charging. -Charging with a suitable charging pad (although this is still significantly slower than wired charging).

On top of that, there is another factor in that wireless charging usually requires you to place your phone on the charging pad, making it impossible to use and charge at the same time (unless you want to hover over your phone like a crank). That said, if you’re a proponent of wireless charging, faster charging speeds may only encourage you to embrace a cable-free future (and will likely force you to stop messing with your phone).
