How to Use Google Search’s New Dark Mode in Any Browser
Can you feel the darkness creeping across the Internet? This is the new dark mode that is rolling out to the main Google search website right now. That’s right, Google Search now has its own dedicated dark mode.
If this sounds familiar to you, you might be thinking about setting up dark mode in the Google Search mobile app, or a dedicated dark mode at the Google Chrome browser level, which has already given the search page a smoky look for mobile and desktop users . However, this new dark mode setting applies specifically to the Google Search website and can be enabled in any browser. When enabled, it displays the main landing page, search results and all menus, a charcoal black hue that Google often uses for darker user interface color schemes.
The new Google Search dark mode is still rolling out, so some users don’t have it yet, although it should eventually be available to everyone. Here’s how to check the setting and enable it:
- Open Google Search in any browser, then search.
- Click the settings icon in the upper right corner of the search results page.
- Select “Search Settings”.
- Click the Appearance tab, then select the theme you want from the list. “Dark Theme” will make Google Search display with a dark theme, even if your OS or your browser doesn’t. The Light Theme option does the same, except for the default white UI. You can also select Default Device if you have dark mode enabled in Windows or Mac preferences and want your browser to match your current system-level user interface.
- Click “Save” to confirm your choice. The search page will update with a dark theme.
Please note that if you delete your browser data and / or unlink your Google account, your Google search settings will be reset to their defaults. The Google search page will also display with the default light mode user interface when using Chrome guest mode .
Google Search isn’t the only Google service with a dedicated dark mode. As we mentioned above, several other Google apps have dark mode options available such as Chrome, Google Docs, and Sheets , and there are several third-party browser extensions that fill in the blanks.
