#SeinfeldTaughtMe: What We Learned From Nothing
The hashtag #SeinfeldTaughtMe , now trending on Twitter, shows that NBC’s groundbreaking sitcom Seinfeld is a surprisingly good source of life hacks, or at least life advice and silly human gimmicks. Here are some of the most helpful lessons.
As a “show about nothing”, ” Seinfeld” really was about everything that makes up everyday life.
His characters dared to break the rules. They played amplified versions of the little tricks we all try.
These tricks were social, mental, and physical.
Sometimes this abnormal behavior worked, but sometimes the cons outweighed the pros.
In punishing the characters for their misdeeds, Seinfeld’s world was fairer and more just than the real one.
But sometimes good people got into trouble.
Really bad stuff.
Shaw even commented on this difference between the usual embellished world of fiction, compared to the vanity of Seinfeld’s “s” reality.
Occasionally the characters pulled out insane gambits that no one would ever try in real life – none other than Seinfeld co-writer Larry David .
Most importantly, Seinfeld reminded us that we are attracted not by our strengths, but by our weaknesses. He even presented a model of friendship based on glorifying these weaknesses, as opposed to the ambitious “best friends who are willing to die for each other” relationships on other shows.
I lied, the main lesson is that everything can be a napkin if you don’t care.
