Best Denver Colorado Hacks From Our Readers
This week on Hack Your City, we received over 125 comments with tips about Denver, Colorado. Some themes: There are great hikes and great breweries, but chill out on both as you get used to the altitude. Here are some of the best tips. Skip to the original post to see dozens more.
EvenBaggierTrousers7 at height:
If your body is not used to it, you will lose strength pretty quickly. About a few months after the move, my SO and I will go out and find that we are pretty excited after having a drink or two. Take your time and drink some water.
BritBenzene with height details:
Don’t fly or get behind the wheel, and then decide to travel from Mile High to the mountains in the same 24 hours. You’re not getting that much oxygen, so going from baseline from 6,000 feet to 10,000+ feet will at least wear your ass if it doesn’t make you really sick.
Another high-rise note by Stankalonius :
Consider getting oxygen from cans (available in many places), as this can actually help alleviate some of the symptoms. Flatulence at altitude is a reality, so be careful.
Piney the 2×4 on going outside:
For some outdoor activities, follow the crowd to Clear Creek for your ascent, Mount Evans for hiking / climbing, and Summit County for ski / snowboarding. Remember Summit County is a legal bag and your kit must be in good condition.
Landon on the suburban train:
Union Station to first stop in Westminster is a local ride, not a regional ride, so it’s half the price. If you bike every day like me, that’s great because from there you can follow the safe bike path to Boulder. And just like that, saving money and getting a pleasant beautiful ride on the irons (mountains).
Jim on looking for areas with good food:
Visit the Mexican and Asian districts of the city for authentic restaurants. If you can’t read any of the signs the food will be great.
RADams5000 by weather:
The weather is awful here. Seriously, I can’t remember when it was not 60 and sunny last weekend. All the children say, “We want to play outside and ride our bicycles.” It’s December. It must be too cold outside. We must be forced to sit inside all day and watch TV. And I had to buy more shorts because dry air makes 60 perfect for shorts.
Caulfield27 on buying legal herb:
Be sure to check if you are going to buy marijuana. Weedmaps is an invaluable resource. Most stores offer different deals for each day of the week, or even discounts for early purchases. Find out if tax is included in the price. This can be a serious expense when taxes are 35% or more. (I found that most stores in Denver include tax in the prices shown, stores in other regions add tax after YMMV.)
Another tip from IthinkHamNoblockedme :
If you have to get involved in growing marijuana, asking questions and talking to marijuana growers, they are friendly and know their shit. Don’t feel like you know what you are doing and just skip and buy too much or a concentration higher than you can handle.
Knowledge about the beer festival:
If you’re lucky enough to travel in late September or early October, I HIGHLY recommend heading to the Big American Beer Festival downtown. 2500+ beers from 500+ suppliers. It’s in the showroom right in the center of town. Tickets need to be bought immediately, when they come out in June, they are quickly sold out. I have been 2 times and it was amazing.
Basic navigation tips from Mary123456 :
A city is usually a perfect grid, and it is easy to tell how far away it is from the street number and direction. Remember, the mountains are always west of you. 0.0 is Broadway and Ellsworth, and from there blocks are in increments of 100, so 500 E. 5th Street is five blocks north and five blocks east of Broadway and Ellsworth.
Slacklinejoe on Snow Safety:
As for the snow: for heaven’s sake, remove it from the roof before you hit the road, this material will fly in large sheets and hit the car behind you or slide forward, completely covering the windshield when you are about to stop.
Some more quick tips:
- The city has two happy hours, one after work and one late at night, says EvenBaggierTrousers7 .

- “Enjoy great city views from the fourth floor balcony of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science,” says Jane . Or get a view for free from the city park, at the western end of the museum, says vertigo700 .

- One final note on height from Slacklinejoe : “Keep in mind that height affects your taste buds, so some foods will taste different / worse until you get used to it.”
