Faster Searches With This New Mobile Browser
iOS / Android: I hate mobile viewing. When I open Safari, I usually try to quickly google something and then go back to my other apps. Lately I’ve been trying out the Cake mobile browser, which is publicly released today for iOS and Android, and it made searches much faster.
The cake is built on search and tactile viewing. Its home screen is topped with a large, thick search bar and includes five vibrant search buttons for videos, images, web, news, and shopping results. (You can also just enter the URL like you would in a regular address bar.)
On most mobile browsers, a search takes you to a list of search results, where you have to click again to get the actual result. But the cake will lead you straight to the first result. You can swipe to the right to go to the next, or to the left to go to the regular results page. Cake downloads them all in the background and cleans them up with an optional ad blocker. But if Google does have a great custom results page for your search term, Cake will notice and take you to a regular results page first.
If you use an image search, you get a typical Google results page, but you can scroll through the results from Giphy, Bing, Flickr, Imgur, and a few stock photography sites. A video search will take you to YouTube, or swipe your finger across video search results from Google, Vimeo, Bing, Yahoo, and Yandex. News search works like a regular search, but only for search results; Google Shopping, Amazon, Walmart, eBay and other stores are used for shopping. You can customize all of these tabs by hiding or reordering them, but you cannot add new ones.
If you search as often as I do, these changes should be enough to get Cake on your home screen. Cake doesn’t try to replace the default browser for links in an app; it’s just for when you intentionally open your browser app. You can think of this as a feature or a bug.
There are several troubles. If you turn on notifications, Cake will send messages asking you to put it on your home screen, even if you’ve already done so. And the browser doesn’t yet have a search function on the page. This is an odd gap for a search-driven application, but if it’s not an expert, Cake is the best mobile browser for searching.
