How to Use Google Pay
It’s been four years since Apple Pay first launched, and Google’s response has always been a little messy. The company is now finally simplifying all of its apps and services into a single product called Google Pay, which is launching today in the US and UK.
Here’s what you need to know about moving to a new app and how to use it.
How to set up Google Pay
If you’re already using Android Pay (Google’s previous in-store payments app), you don’t need to do anything at all. After the update, your app is automatically converted to Google Pay. All of your credit / debit cards and other financial information will also be transferred.
If you are new to this service, you will have to download the app from Google Play . Then, just follow the setup instructions to add a payment method and you’re ready to go. If your phone doesn’t have the right hardware to support Google Pay, the app will notify you as well.
How to buy things with Google Pay
Once you’ve set up Google Pay, you can use it to pay in stores, on the web, and in certain apps. This is how it works.
If you’re shopping at a real store, look for the “GPay” logo or this image (right) of the NFC terminal. Then unlock the phone and bring it to the scanner (you do not need to open the application). Google Pay should launch automatically, but if it doesn’t, try moving your phone or moving it closer. Once registered, follow the onscreen instructions and enter your PIN or sign your name for confirmation.
When you shop online or in the app, you can also use Google Pay. Just look for the button at checkout that says “Buy with GPay” (the old logos for Google Wallet / Android Pay will also work). Click that button and the rest will take care of itself if you’ve already set up your payment method.
Send money to friends using Google Pay
The main Google Pay app will eventually allow you to send money directly to friends, but for now, you’ll need a separate app called Google Pay Send.
The company is currently offering a similar service with its Google Wallet app, which is due to morph into Google Pay Send soon. You can get the current app here and set up an account so that you’ll be ready when the Rebrand hits. Or you can just wait for this feature to be added to the main Google Pay app, although it may take months or more, but for now, Venmo is always there .
