How to Get Rid of Annoying Mac Update Notifications
Software updates are usually good. They can bring new features and important security updates to any device you use with minimal effort on your part. However, if you have a Mac , you’re probably tired of seeing the same “Updates available” pop-up every day on your computer.
No matter how often I let my computer update itself, there is almost always another software patch waiting for me the next morning. Fortunately, there are several ways to get rid of them, depending on how responsible (or irresponsible) you want to be. Here’s what you need to know.
How to Responsibly Get Rid of Mac Update Notifications
If you want to keep your PC up to date but are tired of all these notifications, there is an easy solution (courtesy of Softpedia ). All you have to do is open System Preferences on your Mac and select App Store. Then click Install macOS Updates (or Install OS X Updates for older software).
After that, your computer should be able to update automatically. This should spell the end of all these notifications without any agonizing fears that you are missing out on an important security fix.
Irresponsible way
If you’d rather ignore all Apple Mac updates completely, this is your choice. We will not judge, although you may be attacked as new vulnerabilities are discovered . If that doesn’t bother you, here’s what to do.
Go back to your Mac’s App Store preferences in System Preferences. Then uncheck the box next to Download new available updates in the background. This will completely stop the flow of software updates and notifications. Don’t blame us if you miss an important patch.
How to turn off High Sierra notifications only
If you are using an older computer, you can keep installing small updates while avoiding major operating system updates that can slow down your Mac. High Sierra, Apple’s latest big update, comes with a notification that’s even harder to dismiss than usual (you just have to install it or view more details), but there is a way to make those alerts go away completely.
MakeUseOf offers two different ways to permanently disable High Sierra notification. The first (and easier) way is to launch the Mac App Store and click Updates. You should see a large High Sierra banner at the top of the page. Right-click (or hold the control button and click) anywhere in the image, and then select the Hide Update pop-up button.
This should help, but if it doesn’t work, there is another option that is a little more complicated. First, open Finder and press Shift, Command and G at the same time to launch Go To Folder. Then enter “/ Library / Bundles” in the dialog box and you should see a file called “OSXNotification.bundle”.
Finally, delete the file or move it to another location on your computer – you will need to enter your computer’s password for confirmation. Restart your computer and once you restart, you will get rid of those High Sierra update notifications permanently.
