Don’t Be so Damn Shy When You Ask for a Favor

In the articleHow to send an email to busy people,” founder of a startup Jason Friedman gives some good tips on how to get what you want from the busy and important people. The most important piece of advice that designer Tina Roth Eisenberg quotes today is to be frank, not humble:

If you want an appointment, ask for an appointment. Suggest several options for the time and ask for the specified duration. If you want to be introduced, ask for an introduction. If you are looking for funding, tell him you are currently raising funds and ask for a meeting to show him your proposal. Do not be cunning. Don’t hint. Make the process ridiculously simple by simply asking what you want.

If you’re emailing someone you haven’t spoken to before and you’re trying to “follow up” on an important issue, don’t do it. You are impolite, you are simply scared, and you force the recipient to do the emotional work of extorting your real question.

Busy people need short, direct emails. Don’t write emails quickly, but read emails quickly. Follow Friedman’s six other tips and check out Lifehacker’s tips on how to effectively and respectfully ask for favors .
