How to Make a Pizza Dough Pretzel
I love a good pretzel at the mall. Soft, slightly chewy, with a touch of salt and a signature bitter flavor, few snacks can be so soothing and nostalgic. I also love a good pretzel, a slice of pretzel, or a pretzel stuffed with cheese. However, I don’t like sculpting dough.
It’s not a very difficult dough to make, but it takes a little time and sometimes I just don’t feel like working for fun. Mixing and kneading isn’t hard work, but it is work, and taking a bag of pre-made pizza dough doesn’t work at all.
This is a lie? Yes, but I’m fine with this kind of deception. While the pizza dough and pretzel dough are not identical – the former is slightly wetter – they are made with the same basic ingredients, and when boiled in an alkaline solution before baking, the pizza dough will come very close to you. Pretzels take on a dark crust and bitter taste when dipped in lye, but you can use baking soda to get very similar results. (If you want to recharge your baking soda, bake it first .) To make a self-styled pretzel, you will need:
- 1 bag of fresh ready-made pizza dough
- 8 glasses of water
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- Egg
- Coarse salt
- Anything you’d like to shove in your bites
Place the dough on a lightly oiled surface and knead a little. Using a dough knife, cut the dough into small sized pieces. If you want a simple bite, leave the lumps as they are, but if you want a soft bite, stretch it out (lightly oiled) with your fingers. Then take a stretched piece of dough and wrap it around any food you want, pinching the edges very tightly to seal. Small hot dogs do not need to be completely covered, but the cheese needs to be completely sealed inside the bread jail. (Boiling and baking is enough to make something like a hot dog, but cook other raw meats thoroughly before wrapping them in dough.)
Add baking soda to water and bring to a boil. Toss each pretzel one at a time for 30 seconds, then place them on a baking sheet lined with a lightly greased sheet of parchment paper. Beat the egg and brush each bite with a little liquid. Season with salt and bake in the oven at 450 degrees for about 15 minutes, until the pieces are dark golden brown.
Of course, you don’t have to make them savory. The cinnamon sugar pretzel is also very good. To replicate the experience of a teen at the mall, serve orange julius pretzels and a toast to the death of Claire’s boutique.
