If You’ve Ever Owned a PS3, Sony Could Owe You $ 65
If you bought the first version of the Sony PlayStation 3, you may be entitled to some money.
On the day Sony released the product, it tried to market the game console as a “computer,” going so far as to install and run Linux on it. While technically possible, it turned out to be a security issue as well, which is why Sony dropped this feature through a firmware update.
Several PlayStation buyers have filed a class action lawsuit against the company, and it recently agreed to pay $ 3.75 million to settle the claim. The five main plaintiffs each receive $ 3,500, and the remaining money is split among other PlayStation buyers, lawyers, and dispute resolution organizers.
What does this mean to you
CNET notes that if you purchased the original PlayStation 3 (“fat”) between November 1, 2006 and April 1, 2010, you are potentially eligible for cash.
To qualify, you need to make a purchase from an Authorized US PlayStation Retailer, which means Craiglist and Dorm offers are not eligible.
You must also state that you used (or knew and were excited about) the functionality of the Other OS and believe that your console lost value when Sony took that functionality away, and be prepared to confirm these facts under penalty of perjury.
To receive your money, you will also need to complete this application form and provide your PS3 serial number or PlayStation Network login information that you use with your device, or your PlayStation Network ID.
