Shining Your Shell Will Make Your Life Better
Kitchen sinks are generally thought of as something that you wash things in rather than something to clean on their own, but organizational guru Marla Scilly, also known as Fly Lady, believes a sparkling sink is the key to a happier and an organized kitchen.
Since sinking dirty dishes is a major contributor to my bad moods in my home, I’m a fan of anything that keeps it from piling up. Cleaning your sink until it starts to sparkle can seem daunting, but it makes a lot of sense; Once you’ve cleaned and sanitized your sink back to its original radiant splendor, you are much less likely to stain it with dirty dishes. Other family members are likely to follow suit, as they will be afraid to provoke your anger.
The Fly Lady process is extensive – read it all here – but the basic steps are as follows:
- Remove everything from the sink and fill with very hot water. Add a cup of bleach and let sit for an hour.
- Remove the plug with tongs, drain the sink and rinse thoroughly.
- Remove it with a powder cleaner like Ajax or Comet. Rub well and rinse well.
- Take a butter knife and clean the edge of the sink. If you’ve never done this, it will probably be very disgusting, but that’s okay. Rinse everything one more time.
- Clean the taps around the faucets with a toothbrush.
- Spray on window cleaner and give it a bright shine.
Now you have a very beautiful sink that you hardly fill with dishes, and a sense of accomplishment. Obviously this is not an everyday task, but it will inspire you to keep your beautiful sink as clean and clutter-free as possible.
