Tell Us Your Travel Tips for Shanghai

I love the city, that’s also a verb. But unlike the old West Coast sailors who are drugged and dragged into service, most of us go to Shanghai of our own free will. We need your best advice on visiting (or living) in the most populous city in the world. Shanghai, an ancient but now futuristic city and financial capital of China, is located on the country’s east coast, on the western edge of the Pacific coast. Let’s go now, figuratively.

Every Monday onHack Your City, we ask readers for the best tips about the city: driving tips, restaurant tips, entertainment, and any other tips for visitors and locals alike. Then, on Thursday, we present the best comments. We work in the USA and around the world.

Here’s what we want to know:

What is underestimated? Which places deserve a few more discerning visitors? And what tricks can turn a normal ride into a great one?

How should a visitor approach the city? What position should they take? What local traditions, behavior, and laws should they be aware of? How can they get along with the locals?

What do Americans need to know about visiting China and what applies to Shanghai that doesn’t apply to the rest of the country? What should they know about Shanghai’s past and present?

How does it feel in the long run? What advice can you give to other residents? How do you drive to work, what is your place for lunch every day? Where will you go if you want to get out of town for a day or a weekend?

And one more thing: how would you explain this city if you could not rely on any place names? How would you describe the “atmosphere” of the city in words?

Leave your comments below, and we will highlight the best in the “Personnel” tab. Then we’ll compile the very best tips in a new post on Thursday.
