Explain How Easy It Is to Solve Computer Problems by Recording Your Screen

My family and friends have a reputation for knowing how to solve problems with people’s computers. When this person is in front of me, explaining how to do this on Facebook or change computer settings is quite simple, but when I speak with a friend or family member across the country, things get a little more complicated.

Guiding people through the settings of a computer, especially when they have reached the point where they call someone across the country for help, is not easy. One thing that can make this infinitely easier is screen recording.

Recording the screen and sending it to a friend quickly resolves the question “Which button?” and where? “And can make helping a lot less painful.

If you’ve never recorded a screen on your Mac, here’s how to do it:

Launch QuickTime on your computer and then click “file” at the top of the page. From there select New Screen Recording and click Record.

By default, this will record your entire screen, but you can also use your mouse to select only a specific window or a small portion of the screen that you want to share.

When you’re done recording, click the stop button at the top of the menu bar to end recording.

That’s all. You will still have to explain to your mom how to play that video when you submit it, but once she gets this about blocking, explaining the rest becomes much easier.

And if you’re on a Windows computer, here’s how to do it for you too.
