Really Useful Rules of Royal Etiquette
In preparation for the royal wedding this weekend, The Cut has published a set of etiquette rules that both royals and wedding guests must adhere to. While some – like the correct order of entry to a room – are preposterous and outdated, like the royal family itself, others honestly fit even the least regal of us.
Here are some royal rules for everyone else to remember:
No clams in public
Admittedly, a $ 1 glass of chilled white wine and oysters in the summer is one of the best happy hour deals in New York, but it’s generally a safe bet to avoid food poisoning and, you know, vomiting before your date.
Always carry a black outfit with you
According to Cut , the royals adhere to this rule because they never know when they will need to attend the funeral. Painful, yes, but honestly practical. Not just for a funeral, but in case you need something simple yet classic to wear at the last minute. Excellent life hack.
Watch your dishes
If you need to stop eating at any time, you should place the dishes on the plate to show that you are not finished yet. “Otherwise, if you’re done, you will place the dishes on the plate at an angle with the bottom in the lower right corner ,” notes the Cut. Also, say “I’m sorry” instead of announcing that you are going to the palace of eccentrics . It’s just more polite.
Improve your handshake
Shaking hands, the royals look straight in the eyes and “take their hand firmly but painlessly, shake one or two pumps (no more!) And shine a royal smile,” reports Business Insider . To be honest, this is the perfect handshake. Everything else … overly and uncomfortable .
Without swords
Guests are not allowed to bring swords to the wedding, which of course makes sense. If you are invited to a dinner party or other event, leave your swords and all other weapons at home, friends.
