Pre-Purchase Drinks During Intermission at the Theater
An evening of a live theater show can be much more exciting and fun than watching the latest blockbuster, and a good pre-show and intermission cocktail can make the evening even more fun. Here’s the best way to order drinks at the theater bar.
If you want to spend time at the theater, the most important thing is to manage your time properly. You need to arrive early enough to have a drink at the bar and enjoy a drink. You also need time to plan your intermission. That’s right, you can order and pay for an intermission cocktail at the theater bartender before the show. It’s simple:
- Order a drink.
- Ask them if you can pre-purchase a drink for intermission.
- Tell them your name.
- Pay for both drinks at once.
- Tip your bartender very well.
During intermission, your cocktail, wine or beer will lie somewhere in the bar — usually on the side — on a napkin with your name on it. All you have to do is go up and grab him. No queues, no waiting, no hassle. As our technical editor and co-star David Murphy put it, “This is very important – there are only scrubs waiting in the intermission.” I agree. Plan ahead and not only will you have time to use the toilet, but you can actually enjoy your cocktail rather than quickly throwing it away while the assistants turn on and off the lights.
As a former stage actor, I can tell you that we love it when people have a few glasses. At least two drinks in a comedy club, it relaxes people so that they laugh more, cry more and generally feel more about what is being portrayed on stage. Theater is energy and a relaxed crowd gives off more. It also makes money for the theater! However, it’s only great if people don’t overdo it. I’ve been to a few shows where drunken patrons interrupt scenes, but hey, this is what you get when you put Shakespeare on the street and serve copious amounts of wine. So have a few drinks and enjoy the show, but please control yourself.
