Fried Bread Is Better Than Toast

Most breads are good, but not all breads are good for breakfast. Although toasts are standard, and a cookie and English muffins are exemplary, fried bread can be the best bread for breakfast, especially for hangover breakfast, both in terms of taste, and from the point of view of ease.

At first I enjoyed toast bread as part of a full English breakfast and, as a southerner, was genuinely shocked that we didn’t think about it first. Frying a slice of white bread in bacon or butter suits my Mississippi aesthetic and simplifies my morning. The toasted bread is ideally golden brown in color, and because you cook it right in boiling oil or bacon oil, it is full of flavor, which means you don’t have to fiddle with a toaster or cold, hard-to-spread butter.

If you eat bacon for breakfast (and you do, of course), the process is simple and very quick:

  1. Fry the bacon. Note that your day is already getting off to a great start, as it starts with bacon.
  2. Place crispy bacon on paper towels and turn the burner down a little (medium is fine).
  3. Toast a slice of white bread in a skillet that was used to cook the bacon in a delicious droplet. A couple of minutes on each side is all you need.
  4. Place the grilled, bacon-flavored bread on a plate.
  5. In the remaining bacon fat, stir or fry a couple of eggs. Place everything on a plate. Eat this. You’re doing great, honey.

Fried bread is good with all eggs, especially runny yolks, but don’t limit fried bread until midday. Fried bread makes a great BLT – or a simple tomato sandwich with mayonnaise and tomatoes and nothing else. If you’re not a fan of bacon, check your values (or not; they’re probably better than mine) and sauté your bread. It will still be better than toast, and toast is pretty good to start with.
