How to Download Microsoft October Big Update for Windows 10 Now

Microsoft plans to release Windows 10 version 1809 in early October, but with a little trick, you can get the update right now and grab it for an early test drive.

To get started, you need the following:

As explained in this helpful post from Ghacks , you need to put the Media Creation Tool and the extracted Media Creation Tool Helper content in the same folder on your Windows desktop or laptop. Then you run the tool from an elevated command prompt by adding the “/ selfhost” flag at the end: MediaCreationTool1803.exe /Selfhost

You will then be given the option to update your PC or create installation media for Windows 10 (with the October Big Update integrated). Choose the former if you want to live on the edge – you probably don’t want to install this update on your primary computer just yet – and try the latter if you want to install the update to your virtual machine, a secure solution to test all the new features.

If you are having trouble using this method, you can also try downloading and running the modified Windows Media Creation Tools for x86 and x64 directly from Deskmodder.de.

In terms of features to play with if your early update fails, Microsoft’s big changes in this October update include:

  • Dark theme for explorer
  • Clipboard that can be synced across devices
  • Sending text messages from your PC (if you have a connected Android device)
  • A completely new tab bar, or “Sets”, for almost every application.
  • New (Mac-like) screenshot capture tool replacing the (correct) Snipping tool.
  • New Power Consumption tab in Task Manager to see which applications are draining your laptop battery.
  • Updated game bar with FPS counter and other details on CPU, GPU and system RAM usage.
  • More built-in smilies. Thank you Unicode 11.
