How to Auto-Fill Passwords With LastPass, 1Password, or Dashlane in IOS 12

There are a lot of cool new tricks in iOS 12 . And if you know about security – who is not! – you’ll love all the little password-themed features that Apple has added to its latest mobile operating system. Some are pretty obvious, like the ability to autocomplete SMS-based authentication codes without having to switch to messages or suggesting new passwords, which you can use to create strong unique passwords (that sync with your other devices via iCloud).

Those who don’t use iCloud and instead prefer a third-party app to manage their passwords like LastPass , 1Password, or Dashlane will love how easy it is to autofill passwords in iOS 12. You don’t have to open your password app to copy and paste your credentials every time. when you need them; you can click on the autocomplete prompt that appears above the keyboard whenever you click on the username or password field and iOS 12 will retrieve your credentials from your preferred app.

Of course, you have to set this up first before it works, but it’s a pretty straightforward process. First, make sure the LastPass , 1Password, or Dashlane apps are installed on your iPhone or iPad – of course – and that you’ve already set up your account for them. Standard stuff.

From there, tap the Settings app and scroll down until you see Passwords & Accounts. Touch this:

From there click on Autofill Passwords:

Choose which of your apps you want to use for autocomplete. If you don’t have passwords stored in your iCloud Keychain, feel free to turn this off – at least LastPass recommends that you do.

Now, when you are about to enter a password on a website or supported app, you will see a little prompt that you can click to automatically enter your username and password:

Tapping this prompt will open your third-party app and you might have to authenticate with the app again – it’s easy enough if you’ve set up Touch ID or Face ID using a passcode app. Going back to your login, you may also have to click on each field separately when auto-filling your username and password. It’s a slight annoyance, but better than switching between apps.
