5 Apple IPhone Event Previews That Really Matter
Earlier today, Apple held its annual September event at which it announced a new iPhone (actually several of them), a new Apple Watch, and a few other goodies.
If you missed watching the live event, you can watch a replay of all the events on Apple’s website . For now, here’s a quick rundown of what you missed:
There are several new iPhones
Apple has announced three new iPhones: iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR. Both the XS and XS Max look like last year’s iPhone X, including that iconic cutout. Like most of the other S-updates, the difference between this year’s phones and last year’s model is mainly in the spec update.
The XS has a 5.8-inch screen while the XS Max has a 6.5-inch screen. Both have OLED displays and a “completely new” camera system with a new wide-angle camera with zoomed-in shots and a wider aperture telephoto lens, so both should perform slightly better in low light than their predecessors. Both use a new shooting method called “Smart HDR,” which essentially takes multiple shots when you press the shutter button and then combines them into one finished image. Google is doing something similar with the Pixel.
Both phones also offer dual SIM support (which is great if you travel a lot abroad). Both are expected to get slightly more battery life, with the XS getting about 30 minutes more and the XS Max an hour more. Both will be available in 64, 256 and 512 GB sizes. Apple first offered a 512GB phone. Pre-orders for the XS start at $ 999, while the XS starts at $ 1,099. Pre-orders will begin on Friday and the phone will go on sale on September 21st.
XR is the budget version of this year’s iPhone. It is similar to the others, but has a 6.1-inch LCD display. It starts at $ 749.
No iPhones have headphone jacks anymore
Say goodbye to the headphone jack. Apple has discontinued all of its phones that use headphone jacks and no longer includes a lightning dongle with phones so you can use a traditional headset. This means that if you haven’t used any wireless headphones yet, it’s about time.
About this new Apple Watch
The newest version of the Apple Watch, Apple Watch 4, will be released on September 21. The new Apple Watch is the first new watch design since its launch three years ago. They have an almost edge-to-edge display and are available in both 40mm and 44mm sizes. The increased size of the display allows the device to display more information. It also features an updated accelerometer and gyroscope, as well as a new built-in ECG scanner, marking the first time an ECG product was available over the counter directly to consumers. The FDA has also approved the watch as a medical device.
All this new equipment has a number of advantages. One of the most important is the ability to detect falls and call emergency services on your behalf if you don’t answer. The device will also check your heart rate and look for irregularities. Like the iPhone, the Apple Watch is available for pre-order on September 17 and will go on sale on September 21. Prices start at $ 399 for the GPS version and $ 499 for the GPS + LTE model.
iOS 12 comes out on September 17
iOS 12 officially launches on September 17th. The iOS 12 beta was bumpy, so you can wait a week or so before updating your phone like you normally would with Apple system updates.
However, if you’ve been waiting for the official release, the big day will come next week. Apple’s latest tvOS comes out on the same day.
