Do Not Deny Yourself the “sad Girlish Autumn”
Adele’s first single “Easy on Me ” in six years has just been released, but for some reason, many of us are expected to continue to work and live as usual today. One thing is clear: with a combination of releases from Adele, Mitsky and Taylor Swift, “Sad Girl’s Autumn” is about to be in full swing .
Depending on how much time you spend online or how emotionally vulnerable you are as a person, “Sad Fall Girl” may be a foreign concept to you. I consider this a tragedy. Again, I have a track record of arguing that we need to be more emotionally vulnerable with our playlists . Here’s what you need to know to enjoy the best and most deliciously melancholic time of the year.
First things first: you are a “sad girl” too.
The term “sad girl fall” (or “sad girl fall”) is not new, but it seems to have gained additional support this year for two main reasons:
- The need to fill the void left by “hot wax summer” (loosely based on Megan T Stallion ‘s “Hot Girl Summer” )
- Many highly anticipated music releases from Mitski, Adele and Taylor Swift
Do not be confused by the name – there are no age or gender requirements for a sad girlish autumn. It is more of a way of thinking than any physical description. The only thing you need to do is to wrap yourself in a shaped scarf, look through a figuratively foggy window and plunge into the real melancholy inside.
Moreover, please don’t fall into the trap of thinking that “hot girl” and “sad girl” are mutually exclusive. Just as summer and fall are not enemies, but parts of a coherent whole, we all have the potential to be hot and sad girls at the same time at different times. Autumn is the perfect backdrop to immerse yourself in longing, memories and elaborate darkness, that’s all.
So, are you ready to embrace your feelings this season? We’ll tell you when to mark your calendars, but it’s up to you to prepare yourself emotionally.
Mitsky, Work for the Knife: Released October 5th.
Earlier this month Mitski released the music video for the song “Working for the Knife “. This is the iconic singer / songwriter’s first new single since 2018’s Be the Cowboy , and the video was released with a 24-hour warning for fans investing in a seemingly indefinite hiatus from the artist’s music. As Sasha Leonard writes for Slate , Mitsky’s latest song is “haunting, confusing and 100% hers.”
Taylor Swift, Red (Taylor’s version) : November 12.
The Swifties (aka Taylor Swift stans) (aka Taylor Swift super fans) have long recognized that Red is the most unsuccessful album by a popular artist. Swift admitted this herself at NPR ‘s 2019 “Tiny Desk Concert” , calling it a very “fall album.” This release will not only hit fans sooner than expected, but will also bring with it collaborations with Phoebe Bridgers, Chris Stapleton and Ed Sheeran on the tracks on From the Vault, which were originally written for Red but were not written. make the final cut.
Time to confess: I’m a former hater and a reborn Swifty. A huge part of my newfound love stems from my desire to support the artist’s right to her own music; The dubbing is Swift’s countermeasure against changing masters on her first six studio albums . I’ll be thinking about this legal battle while listening to the ten-minute version of “All Too Well.”
Adele, November 30: 19
The currently aired live single “Easy on Me ” is part of 30 , Adele’s first album in six years. Adele said this week that the album touches on “the most turbulent period” of her life. (Since her last album, 25 years old , the artist has got married and divorced). This is Adele, guys. Adele. Do I really need to explain more how this music will affect us?
More sad girlish music this fall
In addition to the Big Three above, the following editions are sure to soothe your pumpkin spice soul this season:
- Lana Del Rey, Blue Banisters : October 22nd.
- Ed Sheeran, = : October 29
- Snail, Valentine : November 5
- Aimee Mann, Queens of the Summer Hotel : November 5th.

Final thoughts
There is no right or wrong way to hug your inner sad girlfriend. You don’t have to stick with the widely popular musicians mentioned above, or even the other mainstream “sad girls” I forgot to mention, such as Billie Eilish, Lord, Clairo and many others.
Maybe your perfect fall playlist is just Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” on a loop. Or maybe it’s The Chicks’ ring cover of Landslide. You need to find the perfect, emotionally charged tracks so that you can properly analyze the changing seasons.
