Create an Alias for Your ICloud Address to Keep Your Online Privacy
These days, online privacy enthusiasts can get all sorts of one-off tools to keep their actual information safe. Disposable email addresses so that their real address is not disclosed, and disposable phone numbers to make it easier not to divulge their real number.
ICloud has now entered the disposable email arena with the introduction of a feature where you can set up multiple aliases. These aliases can be turned on and off at any time, and all mail to the aliases is automatically redirected in the background to your real iCloud address.
To set it up, you need to go to icloud.com and sign in with your credentials. Then select “Mail”:
From there, select the Gears settings icon in the lower left corner and choose Settings from the pop-up menu. When the following pop-up appears, select Accounts, then Add Alias.
In the next field, you will be prompted to enter the desired alias along with the name “From”. Since you are essentially setting up a new email address, it should obviously be available to you. It took me five tries to find an available one that I agreed with.
(NB: I’ve disabled this alias, so don’t bother sending me cheap online pharmaceutical offers from Canada!)
When you have filled in all the details, click OK and you will be informed that an alias has been set up. Now go ahead and check it out.
Not only is this a handy feature to protect your real email address, but it’s also good if you recklessly chose a silly iCloud name when you first set up the service that you now regret (as I do!). This is your chance to come up with something better that won’t embarrass you when you give it to people.
