Get Your Teen to Read a Classic Romance With Instagram Stories

A third of today’s teens do not read books for pleasure, according to a survey by the American Psychological Association. This is almost three times more than in the 1970s. Yet teens read perhaps more than ever before. Glued to screens, they greedily devour words in the form of texts, photo captions, hashtags, notifications and news snippets posted on social media.

If you parents want to introduce your teenagers to classical literature – and you must! – here’s the idea: get them where they are.

The New York Public Library shares the complete books via Instagram Stories and the performance is fun. The first headline, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland ” by Lewis Carroll, was published this summer, and the second, “Yellow Wallpaper ” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, was published this month. Instagram users can enjoy these classics right in the app by watching clips of cats and latte art. It doesn’t seem as intimidating as getting a heavy tome – the brevity of the pages without distractions makes you wonder what comes next.

Dubbed Insta Novels, this project is not geared towards teenagers – anyone with a focus on social media [ raises hand ] will find it refreshing. But I think this is perfect for high school students. Instagram has overtaken Snapchat as the most used social media app among US teens, according to new research .

You can find Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Yellow Wallpapers in saved collections on the New York Public Library Instagram page. The next book is Franz Kafka’s story ” Metamorphoses” . Why not start a book club with your teen or teen ? Don’t worry kids, nobody has to leave their phone.
