Ruin Someone’s Day With a Simple “Nice to Meet You”

We all want to be memorable or, if not memorable, then at least completely unforgettable. This is why, when addressing someone you’ve met, the simple and joyful expression “Nice to meet you!” or “Hi, I’m Claire!” (use your name) can be disruptive (or at least break off).

This tricky little strategy, which I first saw using Jenna Maroni in 30 Rock, works especially well for people who think highly of themselves. If this is your first time acting this way, it suggests that the person is actually not that special or interesting, and that they have a soft, easily forgettable face.

Be careful when doing it and choose your target wisely. It doesn’t work so well with people you have known for years (like your spouse or ex-spouse), or famous or important people you once met at a party because they probably don’t remember you. But when you use a random acquaintance, you hate – you know, the one you didn’t like right away – you can really drive someone crazy.
