Make Spice Pumpkin Pie With Leftover Dough

Perfectly cooked pie dough is too expensive to waste, and scraps left over from decorating need to be treated with respect. Instead of tossing them or leaving them to languish in the freezer while waiting for a “future project” that will never come to fruition, you should bake them into crisp fries.

This is part of the Lifehacker Eating Trash With Claire series in which Claire Lower convinces you to turn your kitchen waste into something edible and tasty.

While I’m not a huge fan of calling non-potato things “fries,” I’ll make an exception for the pie dough. (Carrot fries, however, can take a long walk from the short pier.) Pie fries are a great snack, breakfast snack, or afternoon coffee break, and they’re the opposite of a challenge. To make them you will need:

  • Pie dough scraps, cut into strips about three inches long and half an inch wide.
  • Egg white, beaten until frothy
  • A mixture of half sugar and half pumpkin pie spice (or whatever spice you wish to use)

Brush the dough strips with egg white, then sprinkle with pumpkin sugar. Remove excess and bake at 350 ℉ for 10-12 minutes, until the dough is crispy. Do not serve with ketchup. (Whipped cream will work, though.)
