How to Complete the Quest

Quests is a game in which a group of friends or colleagues locks themselves in space to play puzzles so that they can all win a reward for leaving the room early. Maybe you love quests and want to get through them faster; maybe you hate them and want to end them. Either way, this video will teach you a thing or two about how to approach any escape room.

Mark Robert, a YouTuber who previously uncovered carnival game cheats , spoke to Dr. Scott Nicholson, designer ofthe Red Bull World Questing Championship . Robert gives ten tips for solving puzzles in a quest, such as how to avoid distractions, how to organize your clues, and which places in the room you should always check (such as under tables and rugs).

Here are three of our favorite strategies from Robert:

Select a project manager

Poor communication is the main cause of team failure, Nicholson says. And the best way to improve communication is to appoint a project manager. This person is not looking for leads. Instead, everyone else comes to them with any new information, and the project manager yells, “We’re looking for something green with a vowel written on it!”

Look for common codes

Notice Morse code, digital display style numbers, bold colors, and simple shapes. But also know that most quests do not require special knowledge; Once you have been given a Braille clue, you do not need to know the Braille alphabet to solve it. The game designer will help you along with some other hints or restrictions. You just need to recognize the type of code you are using so you can find it anywhere in the room.

Know how the quests are arranged

Quests are designed and created by different developers, but generally follow the same rules and guidelines. Knowing this, you will save time in almost all rooms.

For example, most rooms have a one-lock, one-use policy, which means that once you’ve found a use for certain clues or clues, you can safely ignore them for the rest of the puzzle. And in most rooms, you don’t have to disassemble something like a ceiling light or flip through page after page of a book. Remember, they are designed in such a way that a decent number of people can solve them in an hour.

Unless, of course, you are on a quest specifically designed to trick experienced quest fans, which you will find out about in advance. For the vast majority of rooms, you will do better (but still struggle) if you study these tips. Mark and his friends tested all of these tips on three quests, and although they won all of them – and broke the record in one – it still took them 38 minutes or more to solve each room. So don’t worry, these tips won’t ruin the game – quests are still tricky.
