Unzip Files to Your IPhone With This Quick IOS Shortcut
Working with compressed Zip files on a smartphone can be a challenge. There are applications that get the job done, but the process is never as smooth as it should be. On a laptop or desktop computer, unzipping a file is second nature – no more than one or two clicks.
This is why we love Dr. Drang’s latest iOS shortcut. Drang, author of the And Now It’s All That Mac blog, has devised a way to unzip a file and hide its contents on your iPhone (or on a cloud service like iCloud or Dropbox). Its ” Unpack to iCloud “. simple: when you come across a Zip file, open the iOS Share Sheet and choose the Shortcuts action and then choose Unzip to iCloud.
After the shortcut unpacks the archive, by default the files are sent to your iCloud account, but you can change the destination each time you launch the shortcut:
As Drang describes, the shortcut can be a little fussy, so keep trying if it doesn’t work at first : “It crashed on the first try to run it. I don’t know if it was due to a lack of memory or some other strange reason, but it led me to unnecessary debugging. When I couldn’t figure out what was wrong with it, I ran the shortcut again and it worked great. ??♂️ “
If you know there is one cloud service that you will always use with a shortcut, you can edit it to select the new default service (and remove the “Ask where to save” option).
