Ever wonder where your tax dollars actually go? While I have a decent general idea of what the government finances, I never really paid attention to exactly how my money is being used by the state and federal governments.
Where do my taxes go? This is the website that splits this information for you. When you enter your pre-tax income, state and filing status, it generates a report on where your money is going.
For example, if I made $ 60,000 this year and applied as a single person in California, $ 2,219.07 of my income would go to Social Security, $ 40.21 to the Department of Agriculture, and $ 1,266.73 to the Department of Defense.
Figures are based on the proposed 2019 federal budget. It doesn’t give you the exact amount you’re probably paying, but breaks it down into more details than you’ve probably seen before.
It’s worth noting if you try: you can’t use commas when entering your income. I did it the first time and he registered $ 60,000 as $ 60. This is noted on the site, but I definitely missed it the first time around.
