Drink El Presidente to Forget This President
Happy weekend everyone, and welcome back to Happy 3 Ingredient Hour , a weekly drinks column featuring very simple yet delicious libations. This week we’re making a classic (very strong) forbidden rum to help us forget, even for a moment, some of the world’s harsh truths.
This is a tough time to live and this snowflake needs to be drunk. While the real El Presidente is made with white rum, dry vermouth, orange curaçao and a pinch of grenadine, I am omitting this last bite because I have no grenadine, I refuse to leave my apartment to get it, and these first three ingredients are delicious – and even slightly tropical – by themselves. Dry. It’s powerful. This is a classic. This is what our country needs. To make it yourself, you will need:
- 1 1/2 ounce white rum
- 3/4 ounce dry vermouth
- 3/4 ounce orange curaçao (preferably dry)
Mix everything in a glass with ice and stir until cool. Strain into a compartment glass, garnish with a strip of orange peel if you have one, and sip to forget.
