How to Join the Facebook Boycott This Week
Any day is a good day to boycott Facebook, but today is especially wonderful. Yesterday, the Senate Intelligence Committee released two reports on Russian propaganda and its use of social media. The Russian internet research agency has used Facebook and Instagram extensively to target people of different political views, with a particular focus on black Americans.
“The IRA’s most fruitful Facebook and Instagram efforts have specifically targeted black American communities and appear to have focused on developing black audiences and recruiting black Americans as assets,” one report concludes.
So the NAACP is holding a protest under the hashtag #LogOutFacebook . It will start today, December 18, 2018 and will run for a week. Our friends at Gizmodo have more information on the backstory of the boycott , as well as a response from Facebook.
While you are doing this, log out of Instagram and WhatsApp. Both companies are owned by Facebook, and in fact, the IRA focused on Instagram after the 2016 elections, eventually gaining more attention there than on Facebook itself .
