Use Jam to Make Any Morning Good for a Drink
Jam is a regular feature on most breakfast tables, but it is usually found on toast rather than cocktails. Aside from improving the quality of the bread and butter, really good canned fruit can sweeten and soften just about any cocktail, giving it a friendly and welcoming atmosphere perfect for a drink.
I used jam in drinks based on gin , vodka and brandy and every time I thought, “I can have this for breakfast.” I also haven’t found a jam yet that didn’t work in cocktail format (although mango was a favorite ). It is a blended drink that allows you to skip the booze and fruit while keeping the proportions the same. Besides jam and alcohol, you only need lemon juice. (I’m especially happy to try the orange marmalade and tequila.) To make this jam, you will need:
- 2 ounces of rubbing alcohol
- 3 tablespoons quality jam or preserves
- 1/2 to 1 ounce fresh lemon juice (depending on how sour your jam is)
Mix everything in a shaker with ice and shake until unpleasantly cold. Pour through a fine mesh strainer into a sliding glass or lowball filled with crushed ice (depending on your mood) and enjoy your morning toast.
