Top Travel Tips in Albuquerque From Our Readers

Ahh albuquerque! This week in the Hack Your City section, we asked you for tips on visiting or living in a desert city with a funny name. All the best answers are in the Staff tab in the original comment thread . Below are our personal favorites.

  • “Wherever you go to eat, be prepared to be asked if you want red or green. You are asked what kind of chili sauce you want. If you want both, tell them you want Christmas. ”- Brad
  • “Seeing the real Kachina Pueblo dance is an incredible experience. They are common, at least in summer. To find them, you need to go to one of the small grocery stores or shopping points along the Rt. 66 and ask if there is a dance somewhere. Keep a respectful distance from the dancers and ask questions of other passers-by, not the dancers. The dances are serious, the costumes are wonderful. They probably still don’t allow photography or sketching, ”- Silenus.
  • “Take a day trip to Santa Fe and visit Meow Wolf” – jwiemer
  • “The obscure or prized New Mexico Telephone Museum is dedicated to preserving much of the history of the US telephone system, which was developed and maintained by AT&T prior to the dissolution of its government-sanctioned monopoly in 1982 . The museum employs many of AT&T’s staff prior to the collapse and has a stunning display of telephone infrastructure equipment such as switches, PBXs, line equipment, payphones, and more. ”- Nebrakikan.
  • “Stop by El Modelo and go to Huevos Rancheros. It is essentially a tortilla factory that has a breakfast / lunch counter and several picnic tables in the parking lot. But keep in mind that you may not order 1 per person. Last time I swear I went to get my bag and it was [practically] 16 pounds of food. For two “- nigel_m
  • “If you’re first in line for a red light, count to three and look both ways before entering a green light. Trying to beat the red light is a popular sport here. Whoever loses can take you with him. “- Old Bitsmasher
  • “Of special note is Bow & Arrow Brewery, a native-owned brewery that gets a well-deserved national press for unique recipes using local desert ingredients. This is not in the brewery area and is worth a visit. “- Charge of the Light Charade
  • “If impressive colors and lights inspire you, visit during the Christmas season to enter the River of Lights, a spectacular show of millions upon millions of colored lights of all shapes and sizes at the Bioparc Botanical Gardens.” – Bruce Fingerhat
  • “The Parq Central is pretty darn good. This is an old children’s hospital / mental hospital that has been converted into the current hotel. ”- Blind Willie.
  • “If you’re throwing a Fiesta hot air balloon, Tuesday morning is the best. There are not many people here, because on this day the schedule is usually only in the morning, and there is no such topic as special forms “, – wasabipiz
  • “ABQ is about a hundred feet taller than Denver. HYDRATE. Summer, winter – it doesn’t matter. DRINK. WATER. If you are not from life living in CO Springs or the Swiss Alps, expect to get tired on the first day. Lack of oxygen combined with shockingly low humidity (remember, desert) will keep you dry. Take your time and do not overexert yourself. “- WangChung81
